A large front graphic may look simple on the artwork.
In production, it is often more difficult than an all-over repeat pattern.

What Is Repeat Printing?
A repeat pattern continues across the fabric.
Examples include:
- Stripes
- Flowers
- Small animals
- Dots
- Geometric shapes
The cutting team can usually place the paper pattern within a wider area of the printed fabric.
The exact position of each small graphic is less critical.
This makes repeat printing more flexible for cutting and material use.
What Is Position Printing?
A position print is designed to appear in a specific place on the finished product.
Examples include:
- One large animal on the front
- A logo centered on the chest
- A face divided across two panels
- Text placed above a zipper
- A graphic aligned with a seam
The fabric, cutting pattern, and sewing process must all work together.
Where Movement Happens
Small variations can occur during:
- Fabric printing
- Fabric relaxation
- Lamination
- Cutting
- Foam insertion
- Panel alignment
- Sewing
- Binding
A few millimeters may not matter on a repeat pattern.
The same movement can be obvious when two eyes, lines, or letters need to meet across a center seam.
Panel Shape Also Matters
A swim vest is not a flat rectangle.
Panels may curve around the chest, neck, and arm openings. Once sewn and filled with foam, the artwork can appear slightly stretched or angled.
The flat artwork should be developed around the actual sewing pattern, not only around a product photo.
Factory Insight
Before approving a position print, check:
- Final paper pattern
- Seam allowance
- Zipper position
- Binding width
- Foam thickness
- Panel curvature
- Safe distance from edges
- Acceptable placement tolerance
Large graphics should allow a small visual tolerance without looking incorrect.
Choose the Print Method Early
Repeat patterns are usually more forgiving and efficient.
Position prints offer stronger visual impact, but they require better artwork preparation, controlled cutting, and closer production inspection.
Neither method is better for every product.
The right choice depends on the design and the level of placement accuracy the brand expects.
