Artwork is usually created on a clean, flat template.
The finished swim vest is curved, padded, cut, stitched, and bound around the edges.
A safe zone connects those two realities.
What Is a Safe Zone?
A safe zone is the area where important artwork can be placed with lower risk of being covered, distorted, or shifted during production.
Key elements should stay inside this area:
- Logos
- Product names
- Faces
- Eyes
- Small text
- Thin borders
- Matching lines
- Important icons
Background colors and non-critical patterns can usually extend beyond it.
Why Artwork Moves
The production process includes several stages:
- Printing
- Lamination
- Fabric relaxation
- Cutting
- Matching with foam
- Sewing
- Binding
- Final shaping
Each stage can introduce a small amount of movement.
Individually, the movement may be minor. Together, it can affect artwork placed too close to a seam or edge.
Binding Covers More Than the Edge
Buyers sometimes place a logo close to the outer cutting line because it looks fine on the template.
After sewing, the binding folds over the edge and covers part of the visible fabric.
The same issue can happen around:
- Neck openings
- Arm openings
- Zippers
- Bottom edges
- Side seams
Artwork should be checked against the finished visible area—not only the cutting line.
Curved Panels Change the Look
Once a flat panel is filled with foam and wrapped around the body, straight lines may appear curved.
Large circles may look slightly oval.
Graphics close to the side of the vest may become less visible from the front.
The mock-up should consider the three-dimensional shape.
Factory Insight
Before final artwork is released, ask the factory for:
- Actual production template
- Cutting line
- Sewing line
- Visible finished area
- Binding width
- Zipper position
- Recommended safe zone
- Placement tolerance
Do not create final artwork from a product photo or rough outline.
Design for Production, Not Only for the Screen
A good safe zone does not limit creativity.
It protects the most important parts of the design and gives production enough tolerance to achieve a consistent result across the full order.
